How to Change a Light Globe at Home
Here are some tips on how to change a light globe safely at home.
There are two main types of standard light globes.
One is the bayonet cap (BC) and the other is the Edison screw (ES).
Both types are very easy to change - once you know how.
In Sydney, many homes and businesses still require licensed electricians to help with changing light globes and light fittings, depending on the type of fitting and globes, etc.
However, if you’re changing a standard light globe yourself, follow these steps (for a ceiling-mounted light fitting):
• Turn the light switch off
• With aid of a stabilised and locked ladder, reach up and gently push the light globe upwards towards the ceiling
• If the globe ‘gives’ and pushes up, turn it anti-clockwise and pull it out
• If the globe won’t push up, it could be an ES globe
• For an ES globe, gently unscrew the globe in an anti-clockwise direction and take it out
• Regardless of the sort of globe, use a ‘feather touch’: The last thing you want happening is the globe breaking in your hand.
SAFETY FIRST: Take care climbing up and down ladders to remove and replace light globes!
Once you have the globe in hand, take note of the wattage, e.g. for a living room which needs to be bright, you might find that a new globe of 75 watts or so is necessary. You can also fit an LED globe, of say 40 watts, which will give a similar amount of light, but will help to save on power costs.
